Anita George
Calligrapher and Lettering Artist

 Anita

I have had a passion for, and love of art for as long as I can remember.  Growing up in country Victoria from Warrnambool to Wangaratta, I acquired an appreciation for the colours and textures of the beautiful Australian landscape from an early age.

I initially trained as a Tracer/Draftswoman, working with engineering companies, before moving into Landscape Presentations and Graphic Designs.  In 1996, I joined the Victorian Calligraphy Society and learnt the beautiful letter forms of the historical scripts.  I have attended workshops with calligraphers from all over the world

With the skills and knowledge acquired through this training, I started teaching. I taught initially in my local area (Albury), then in Melbourne and interstate.  I really enjoy being able to share my experience, skills and techniques with my pupils, in addition to bouncing news ideas off each other.

In 2007, I moved to Warragul (to a large studio) where I had the freedom to experiment, crossing historical techniques with interpretive calligraphy. Using various methods, I incorporate both letter forms and painting.  Doing this, full legibility of the words are sacrificed to create an overall finish, therefore inviting the viewer to look into the piece, to see further. Rather than just words, the piece becomes an object of contemplation.  I believe that calligraphy unites verbal and visual cues with gestured movement.

I enjoy adapting historical script, both in application and style, to become part of our modern age, and to demonstrate the flexibility and viability of calligraphy as one of the Great Arts.

I have completed many private commissions for both traditional calligraphy pieces, and paintings.  I travel widely to teach and exhibit my work, and love the excitement of bringing calligraphy to a new audience.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in commissioning work, tuition, classes, exhibitions, or if you require further information.
